Capital Air Show

July 2nd, 2014

The California Capital Airshow in Sacramento CA at the Mather AFB Airport promised to be a great event with the promise to be the largest collection of P-38 Lightnings in 50 years.

The show turned out to be a terrific event. The weather was simply gorgeous, perfect blue skies, although a little too hot for photography. Heat Shimmer can be disastrous especially at an event such as this one where the flight line is quite far from the spectator's line. In the end, the P-38 Lighting Strike did not turn out to be 6 strong as expected. Two owners pulled out at the last minute. But we still had 4 P-38's in the air at the same time, including my favorite, Glacier Girl. Light at the show is not great until late afternoon, but given the large expanses of hay grass, it provides somewhat of a natural fill card and one can still get good images. The flow of the show is not as fast paced as in a military show but it still contained great variety and superb fly byes! The U2 and B2 were nice surprises!
